| Violence: Policemen deployed in Aba | | Monday, Feb 27, 2006 | In the aftermath of Sunday's reprisal attacks in Onitsha, anti-riot policemen have been deployed in Aba, Abia State, to forestall the spread of the riot. Aba Area Police Command said the measure was against the backdrop of reported cases of major violence and killings in some parts of the country. It said the measure was also to prevent reprisal attacks in Aba. A senior police officer told newsmen on condition of anonymity that the surveillance had been beefed up, while policemen had been posted to strategic areas, such as Ehi Road, onions and yam markets. Our correspondent reports that some 500 people have taken refuge at the command, while other residents fled the city for fear of attacks. The Chief Iman of the Aba Central Mosque, Alhaji Idris Bashir, has condemned the spate of killings. He told newsmen that the violent reaction to a newspaper cartoon in Denmark was out of ignorance, lack of education and unemployment. | |
